Abstract
"This paper discusses different possibilities and advantages of using audio in Virtual Envionments (VE). A brief introduction to auditory simulation techniques is also given. Moreover, two experiments are described where auditory information is shown to increase the sense of user-perceived presence and enjoyment. Indications that auditory rendering complexity and congruency with visual stimuli has positive effects on over all VE quality are also presented. Finally, an experiment conducted in both real and virtual condition is discussed where visual stimuli is shown to affect perception of room acoustical attributes. The conclusions are that even if the VRsimulation is primarily visual or auditory, addition of an extra modality may heavily affect the perception of the simulation."
